Started in a three-car-garage in 1939, SUPERthrive® has had a fabulous journey few products can match — all thanks to the creativity and passion of its founder, Dr. John Thomson.
Dr. Thomson studied Biochemistry at the University of Southern California, where he became fascinated by the renowned Dr. Fritz Went’s new discoveries in biochemical processes that aid in plant development. These discoveries inspired Dr. Thomson to create a product dedicated to plant wellness, eventually earning SUPERthrive the World’s Fair Gold Medal in Science and Industry in 1940.
There is no equivalent to SUPERthrive
A true old-time salesman and eccentric, Dr. Thomson, proud of his World’s Fair Gold Medal, spread the word of SUPERthrive traveling nursery to nursery until his passing in 2011.
SUPERthrive’s ROLE IN OPENING OF ICONIC THEME PARK
Disney borrowed against his life insurance and sold vacation property to build what some in Hollywood dubbed “Walt’s folly.” With his reputation and finances at stake, Disney pushed a frenzied schedule to open the park only one year after construction began.
With landscaping a critical component of the project, the park required over 6000 mature trees and shrubs, including 400 60’ palm trees, to be transplanted off-season in 100 degree California summer heat. With the help of SUPERthrive, there was no loss of transplanted landscaping.
Nearly half of the United States population gathered around their black-and-white televisions on July 17, 1955 to watch the park unveiling co-hosted by actor and future president Ronald Reagan.
